Big 5 Sporting Goods Interactive Systems Training

The Problem and Solution:

  • Problem: Big 5 Sporting Goods needed to train employees on newly implemented systems efficiently and quickly.
  • Solution: Developed comprehensive training courses to educate employees on the functionalities and processes of the new systems.

My Process:

  1. Analysis:
    • Conducted thorough analysis of new systems; relied on subject matter experts (SMEs) for screen recordings due to limited access.
  2. Planning:
    • Created module templates to meet tight deadlines; prioritized higher-end custom features for efficiency.
  3. Content Creation:
    • Reduced text entries to address learner fatigue; adjusted mobile design to overcome compatibility issues with the LMS and JavaScript.
  4. Testing and Feedback:
    • Utilized rapid prototyping; gathered feedback from stakeholders and learners to refine the training approach.
  5. Implementation:
    • Storyboarded the first project; skipped storyboarding for the second project to expedite development.
  6. Evaluation and Iteration:
    • Completed the first project on a feasible timeline; compressed the timeline for the second project, completing it ahead of a typical delivery.

Hybrid Approach:

  • Embraced a hybrid approach, incorporating elements of agile methodologies to adapt to evolving requirements and constraints.
  • Leveraged SMEs for screen recordings and module templates to meet tight deadlines.
  • Prioritized efficiency by focusing on higher-end custom features and eliminating waste in the second project.

Outcome:

  • By adopting this hybrid approach, the Big 5 Systems Training project successfully addressed challenges and delivered effective training solutions to employees.
